i remember being back in high school, which the movie singles ward came out. i remember that we watched the movie like 10 time over again, cause we all thought it was all so funny! but little did i know that over the next several years of my life, that my life would become just like it was portrayed in the movies.
every singles ward has such a stigma, no? and for the most part each singles ward lives up to that stigma.
i had the great opportunity to visit, yet another singles ward. and just as portrayed in the movie singles ward, i found the same character surrounding me in the sacrament hall, sunday school, and relief society.
you have the fundamentals. this kid who walks in late, but does so on purpose so that he can choose his seat, and the girl he does or doesn't sit next to. he could care less about what people think about him, as long as he is having a good time.
then of course you have girl who is so done up, so in style, and spent at least 2 hours on getting ready for her appearance in sacrament meeting. the girl that you know is just super fun, and always plans the social gatherings (outside of the organized singles activities).
every singles ward has the shy guys. 85% of the time is a good looking kid, and you know that everyone wants to date him, but he is just too shy to ask a girl out. we had combined for 3rd hour, and just as i predicted, two blonde, done up girls, sit next to him, trying so hard to get into the conversation he is having with the another guy, who is the outgoing, but tries to maintain his spirituality status.
and don't worry the singles ward couple was totally there. the one success story, or at least one in process. they smiled the entire meeting.. held hands. luckily there wasn't too much PDA.
but maybe my favorite person today, was the girl who gave a talk. she is a BYU student home for the summer. and let's just say that my cousin and i decided that she incorporated everything that she ever learned in her BYU religion classes in her talk. she spoke for like 35 minutes. i really hope that she'll AS LEAST get a date out of that. the following speaker, you'd think he was 90 yr old at the rate he spoke. he took a moment of silience after every thought.
as we endured these two talks (at 5 to the hour, we still had a recent RM to speak), i listened to the a young man who was obviously socially nervous as he made whimpering noises, or giggling noises. i really wasn't too sure what he was doing, and i was nervous to look and find out. so i didn't.
and to top it all off, the topic of eternal marraige. suddenly the whole room giggles and makes comments that they think will lighten the mood, but really just make them look like an idiot! a topic that everyone knows is on their mind and wants so badly, but would never admit it!
i seriously could go on forever with all the things that i saw, heard, and just laughed about in the period of three hours. don't get me wrong, it WAS my first time to this singles ward. i will try not to be too judgmental, but i will allow this experience bring joy to my life! cause it is so funny!
in the end, i am grateful for singles wards because for one that moves to a new state and city, it is a great way to become associated with people with your same values (for the most part). and of course i will try it again, give it another chance. in fact i might even try out a couple of other wards.
at least....this expereince makes me laugh and just smile for 3 hours straight!

Hahaha! It's all so true! Even though I feel as though I'm eternally stuck in this singles' Ward scene, I atleast know each Sunday I will be entertained at church, and something will happen that makes me laugh!!! One Sunday a boy got up to speak and said that he was told to picture everyone naked, and then preceded to say, "And you all are looking REALLY good right now!!"...gotta love singles wards!!!!
